Answer

Library privileges expire every two years. To renew, you need to verify your name and address the next time you visit the library.

Library card holders will be asked to verify their name and address by showing:
   A California Driver's License,
   Identification Card, or
Other official photo ID, such as a passport or Resident Alien Card.

If your identification does not display your current address, the following
forms of address verification are acceptable:
A rent receipt for the current month,
An unopened envelope of a recent piece of mail addressed to you, or
A preprinted check that display your new address.

If you have questions, please contact the library at 619-236-5800.

  1. Why can't I renew my library card online?

  2. With few exceptions, San Diego Public Library cards are solely for California State residents. To verify you still qualify for an account, the library needs to verify your address.

  3. Again--why can't we renew online? Answer 2 is silly--why would anyone who is not resident of this area find it convenient to check out items from this library as opposed to the one where they live? Because of this strange rule, I now have to visit the library twice--once to renew and once when the book I want actually arrives from the other library location. Thanks SDPL!

  4. In addition to verifying eligibility for a San Diego Public Library card, your current address needs to be verified for billing purposes in the event checked out materials are not returned.
